Holiday Party and Math Test Rescheduled

We hope you're enjoying your "ice" day today!  We will have our Holiday Parties on January 6, between specials and lunch (11am-12:30pm).  We will not be watching the Polar Express.  The Unit 5 Math test will be Tuesday, January 7.  We will review in class on Monday the 6th.  Have a wonderful break!! :)

4th grade updates 12/13



  • Monday is Spelling Test 12.  Please remember to review Words to Learn and Word Preview words, as well as the skill for the week (plurals).
  • Math Unit 5 test is Friday, 12/20.  Students will receive their review sheet Wednesday and we will review in class on Thursday.
  • Secret Santa Shop is next week!  Palo--Tuesday, Burch--Wednesday, Bradner--Thursday.  Information was sent home last week.
  • Our classes reached the goal of 130 cans for the Red Cross food drive!  The prize that they earned is a game party.  This will take place on Thursday, 12/19, in the afternoon.  Students are allowed to bring in board games, as well as hand-held electronic games. Please know we are not responsible for these items on the bus or at school. Students should have their names on all items and the games will be kept in their lockers until game time.  Thank you for all the donations for the food drive.  Great job 4th grade!  
  • Our Holiday Parties will be Friday morning between specials and lunch.  The parents on the Holiday Party Committees have fun parties planned!  We will be watching The Polar Express on Friday afternoon.  It should be a fun day!
  • There is NO SCHOOL December 23-January 3.  School resumes January 6.  Have a great holiday break!! :)

Updates from 4th grade! (11/15)

*Spelling Test 10 is Monday!  Don't forget to study Words to Learn, Word Preview, and skill for the week.
*Math Unit 4 Test is Friday, November 22.  Review Sheets will be coming home Wednesday the 20th.
*Diversity Project is due on Friday, November 22!  Students made their cover in Technology this week.  Presentations are planned for Monday, November 25.
*The Diversity Feast is Monday, November 25.  Please make sure your food is at school no later than 12:30 pm.  If items need to be dropped off in the morning, please make sure your dish is labeled with student and teacher name, heating, and serving instructions, if needed.  If your dish can be kept warm in a crock pot, that is very helpful!  We have lots of power strips to keep crock pots heated through the morning, if needed.  Please make arrangements to pick up your dish/crock pot at the end of the day if your child is unable to take it on the bus.  Also, make sure utensils are labeled with your child's name!  Don't forget we have SEVERE nut allergies in 4th grade, as well as other food allergies.  PLEASE label your food with any common allergens.  THANKS! :)  If you signed up at Open House to help with the Feast, your child's teacher will be contacting you.  We will not be able to have additional parent help due to space.  Thanks for understanding.  It's going to be a great day!
*Wednesday, December 4, is the Field Trip to the Community Theatre.  Thank you for sending in your permission slips and $6 donation.  Chaperones will be contacted by their child's teacher before Thanksgiving break.
*There is NO SCHOOL Friday, December 6, due to Professional Development.

Updates from 4th grade! (10/25)

Updates and Reminders from 4th grade 10/25:


-Please have your children practice their multiplication facts! They need to know them randomly and quickly. Great resources are fact triangles, Sum Dog, and the Everyday Math Online website!


-4th graders will have a few tests this week:
  • Spelling Unit 7 Test is Monday.  Please remind your child to review the skill for the week, along with their Word Preview and Words to Learn words.
  • Burch's class will test Math (Unit 3) on Wednesday, October 30, and Social Studies (Chapters 1-3) on Thursday, October 31.
  • Bradner's/Palo's classes will test Social Studies (Chapters 1-3) on Wednesday, October 30, and Math (Unit 3) on Thursday, October 31. 

-The morning of Halloween students will participate in a special math/science activity we like to call Gourdfest!  Gourds have already been donated, so all we will need are ribbons, buttons, googlie eyes, foam shapes, tacky glue, and other crafty items to decorate gourds.  Thank you in advance for your donations!    


-The school-wide Halloween Parade is at 2pm on October 31.  Our classroom parties will follow the parade.  Parents who signed up at Open House to help with the Halloween Party are planning fun parties for our students! We try to keep this simple and fun!


-October Reading logs are due on November 1st! Just a reminder that your children need to read 400 minutes during the month of October. The children should be logging what they are reading and totaling each week.  A parent signature is required on the bottom of the reading calendar. There is a link under "Important Links" on our 4th grade blog (http://hutchings4th.blogspot.com) if you need a blank copy of the Reading Calendar.

-Please make sure to log into PowerSchool regularly.  The emails that are sent automatically do not contain checked off assignments or indicate which assignments are late/missing.  The end of the quarter is Friday, November 1. Report Cards will go home with students on Friday, November 8.

Updates from 4th Grade! (10/11)

Updates and Reminders from 4th grade:

-Tonight is Hutchings movie night! Movie will begin at dusk!

-Unit 5 spelling test is Monday.  Please remind them to review the skill for the week, along with their Words to Learn and the Word Preview words.

-MEAP testing Tuesday and Wednesday this  coming week.  Please make sure your child has a good night's sleep and a nice breakfast!  Thank you for not scheduling appointments during testing. :)

-Hurricane Hustle is Friday, October 18, at 2pm.

-Burch & Bradner’s Book Orders are due Friday, October 18th:)

-The Halloween Parade is at 2pm on October 31.  Our classroom parties will follow the parade.  If you signed up at Open House to help with the Halloween Party, you will be contacted with more information.

-Have you signed up for Remind 101 Texts? If not, please do so! It’s a great way to get simple reminders from school!

-Are your children accessing the blog for Sitton Spelling activities practice games and activities? Take a look! They are awesome!  (Look under Important Links for many content area games and activities!)  http://hutchings4th.blogspot.com

-Are you children playing games on the Everyday Math site or using Sum Dog? We are hearing a lot of positive feedback! Every child needs to be sure they have mastered their multiplication facts!

--Today in fourth grade, we cut out our multiplication/division fact triangles. These are in baggies and need to be kept in homework folders. This in another terrific way for kids to practice their facts!!!

4th Grade Reminders (week of 10/7)

A few reminders for this week:

-Monday students will take their Unit 4 spelling test.  Please remind them to review the skill for the week, along with their Words to Learn and the Word Preview words.

-On Monday students will receive their math unit 2 review sheet.  We will review in class on Tuesday, and their Unit 2 math test will be Wednesday afternoon.  

-MEAP testing begins this week!  Students will be testing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings this week.  Please make sure your child has a good night's sleep and a nice breakfast!  Thank you for not scheduling appointments during testing. :)

-Progress Report slips went home on Friday.  Please sign and return to school on Monday!

-Rollerama night is Thursday at 5:30pm and Hutchings Movie Night is this Friday at 7pm.

Updates 9/25


  • If you have not signed up for classroom text reminders, we are sending home another copy of the instructions for your information. 
  • Our Fourth Grade Blog is great!  It is packed with resources, updates, and information for 4th graders and their families.  Be sure to check it out, and sign up for email updates (at the top left).  This is a great way to stay informed.  There are many content area resources and games available!
  • Students received their Everyday Math Online user information last week.  Please use this resource for games and printing extra copies of study links, if needed.  There is also an online Student Reference Book available, in case your child forgets his/hers at school.
  • School Picture Day is tomorrow!!  Wear your smile! :)
  • Bradner/Palo classes have a Social Studies quiz this Friday.  Study Guides are in their Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN).  They are reviewing today.
  • Bradner book orders are due Friday!  
  • Hurricane Hustle envelopes can be returned each Friday for prizes.  The Hurricane Hustle is Friday, October 18, in the afternoon.
  • 10/8-10/16 MEAP Testing  (Please avoid scheduling appointments or vacations for this time period.)

Updates from 4th grade

Updates for this week:

*Thursday is our first math test covering Unit 1.  Students received their study guide today and should make sure to have it in class tomorrow for reviewing. 

*Students will have a Spelling Test each Monday.  They should review their Words to Learn, Preview Words, and skill for the week to prepare for the test.

*Picture Day is September 26. 

*MEAP testing is October 8-16.  Please avoid scheduling appointments during this time, if possible.  Thank you!

*You may sign up to receive email updates from our blog (http://hutchings4th.blogspot.com).  Simply go to our blog and enter your email in the box on the top left of the page.  This is one of the best ways to keep up with updates from 4th grade!

First Week of School!

2013-2014 School Year!

Updates from 4th grade 5/17


  • Math Unit 12 test is Monday.  We went over review sheet in class today.
  • The 4th/5th All Star Football game is today!  
  • Spelling Test 27 is Monday.
  • FYI—The preschool classes will have the fire truck visit on the 22nd and 23rd.  If you see the fire truck here those days, that is why!  
  • We have several end of the year common assessments coming up! Our Math assessment will be Wednesday, May 22.  Science assessment will be Thursday, May 23.  Social Studies assessment will be Friday, May 24.  ELA assessment will be Wednesday, May 29.  We will review for the common assessments in class.
  • We are having a few speakers from the community here on Thursday, May 23.  Judge Miriam Cavanaugh, Attorney Ted Stawick, and School Board Member/Firefighter Mike Witt will be speaking to our children about their roles in Michigan Government.  It should be a great morning!    
  • There is No School on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day.
  • Field Day is Tuesday, May 28.  (Rain date May 29)  Make sure to wear sunscreen!
  • The Hutchings Showcase is Friday, May 31, at 9:30am.
  • Our Fourth Grade Spelling Bee is Wednesday, June 5, at 1:30pm. More information to come.
  • The Last Day of School is Thursday, June 6!!  We will have our 4th grade picnic that day.  We will be sending more info about the picnic soon.

Updates 5/3

  • Fine Arts was awesome!  Great job 4th graders!! :)
  • Spelling Test 25 is Monday. Please remind your child to review their Spelling notes and Words to Learn!
  • The Math review sheet is coming home today!  Please make sure your child brings it back Monday completed so we can review!  Unit 11 Test is Wednesday, May 8.
  • Our Nature Center Field Trip is Tuesday, May 7. Please make sure your child brings a disposable sack lunch and wears comfortable shoes!  We really wish we could have taken all interested parents, but the Nature Center gave us a chaperone limit.  Thank you for being so supportive!
  • Last week of Library is the week of May 13.
  • There is No School on Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day.
  • Field Day is Tuesday, May 28. (Rain Date 5/28).
  • The Hutchings Showcase is Friday, May 31, at 9:30am.  Mrs. Shultz will be sending more info soon!

Updates from 4th grade 4/25

The end of the year is quickly approaching!  Please make a note of the following dates:

  • Spelling Test 25 is Monday.  Please remind your child to review their Spelling notes and Words to Learn!
  • Book Fair is next week!  All classes are browsing on Tuesday and shopping on Friday.
  • Fine Arts Festival is on Tuesday, April 30.  Please make sure your child is ready and by their locker at 6:45 pm.  The show will be about a half hour and the Book Fair will be open that evening.  
  • The Math review sheet will go home on Friday, May 3.  Unit 11 Test is Wednesday, May 8.
  • Our Nature Center Field Trip is Tuesday, May 7.  Please make sure your child brings a disposable sack lunch and wears comfortable shoes.  Your teacher will let you know who will be chaperoning.  Our PTO covered the majority of the cost for this field trip!  Thank you, PTO!
  • Last week of Library is the week of May 13.  
  • There is No School on Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day.

4th Grade Updates 3/22


  • Spelling Test 21 Monday. No new spelling next week.
  • All missing/late work needs to be turned in first thing Monday morning!  Report Cards will come home with students on Thursday. 
  • Students need to turn in their last March Is Reading Month Tracking Sheet slip by Thursday! Don’t forget to turn in your March Book-It Calendar and Book Review Thursday, too!!
  • Math Unit 9 Test Wednesday. Review sheets will be passed out Monday and we'll review in class on Tuesday.
  • We are having our 4th Grade Read-In on Wednesday afternoon! Please make sure your child brings several different books/magazines to read (both fiction/non-fiction)! We'll be reading all afternoon!! They may also bring a beach towel to sit on, as well as a snack/drink to enjoy, if they would like. :)
  • There is NO SCHOOL March 29-April 5. School will resume on Monday, April 8th. We hope you have a relaxing Spring Break! :)

Updates 3/6


  • Tomorrow is Reading Night from 6-7pm.  Hope to see ya there!  
  • Don't forget the first week March is Reading Month Slip is due Friday!! 
  • We are going to the Capitol on Friday!  Make sure to pack a disposable lunch, as we will be eating on our field trip.  Students do not need any money...there is no gift shop.  Chaperones may follow the bus or meet us at the capitol.  Maps will be coming home today.  If you plan to follow the bus, please make sure to be at school by 9:40 am.  Each class will tour as a whole group in a quiet line.  Please remind your child this is a government building and we are expected to tour quietly, as business is taking place.  We are sorry that all chaperones from the first planned trip could not go this time.  We had to decrease number of chaperones due to rescheduling.  Remember the Capitol building is open to the public and you can take your children any time!  We are working on a spring field trip that will provide more chaperone opportunities. :)    
  • Spring Forward this weekend!  Don't forget! 
  • Math Unit 8 Test is Monday.  Review sheets are coming today, we will review tomorrow and Friday morning, and test Monday.  
  • Unit 19 Spelling Test is Monday.
  • Spring conferences are Thursday, March 21.  These are scheduled on an as-needed basis.  We will be letting you know this week if a conference is scheduled for your child.
  • There will be no school Friday, March 29 through April 5.  Classes resume April 8!  Happy Spring Break! :)
  • Mark your calendars....Fine Arts Festival for 4th grade is Tuesday, April 30.  More info coming!

Updates from 4th Grade!

*The Hutchings Carnival is TONIGHT from 6:00-8:30pm!  Thank you for all your raffle basket donations! :)

*Progress Report Slips will come home today.  Please sign and return Monday.  Thanks!

*We are going to the Capitol on Friday, March 8.  Information was sent home on Wednesday.  Please sign and return the new permission slip as soon as possible.  We will notify chaperones next week. 

*Spring Photos on Thursday, 2/28.  Forms were sent home last week.  Please contact the office if you need a new form.

*Penny Drive ends next Friday, 3/1. 

*Reading is Out of this World!!  March is Reading Month! :)  Kick –Off will be on March 1 with "Dress as your Favorite Dr. Seuss character" spirit day.  More info will be coming home next week about Reading Month.

*Family Reading Night is 6-7pm on Thursday, March 7.  Students must be
chaperoned and can wear pjs.  There will be reading games in the cafeteria, and Interplanetary Photo Booth on stage, Read Alounds in the Media Center, and tons of fun!

·         Report Cards are coming home with students today!  Please remember to sign the report card envelope and return to school Monday.  Thanks!

·         The Unit 15 Spelling Test is Monday, January 28.  Take a look at “Important Links” on the 4th grade blog (http://hutchings4th.blogspot.com) to take advantage of lots of fun spelling practice activities!

·         After school swim is Friday, February 1.  Permission slips came with students.   

·         The Hutchings Carnival is February 22 from 6:00-8:30pm!  Ms. Bradner’s class is putting together a “Winter Indoor/Outdoor Fun” basket.  Mrs. Palo’s class is putting together a “Gift Card” basket.  Mrs. Burch’s class is putting together a “Junk Food” basket.  We are accepting donations.  Thank you in advance for your generosity!

·         Please remember to check PowerSchool regularly.  We update weekly to keep you informed of your child’s progress, as well as missing and late assignments.  If you need your child’s login information, please contact the office.

*No school on Monday, January 21st, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
 
*We will have our Unit 14 Spelling test on Tuesday, January 22nd.  

*We will be giving our district common assessments next week.  Students will take the Math Mid-Year assessment on Tuesday, the Science Q2 assessment on Wednesday, and the Social Studies Q2 assessment on Thursday.  We have been working in class to review for these assessments.
 
*The school carnival will be on February 22nd and the theme is "Outer Space."   Mrs. Palo's class theme is Gift Cards.  Mrs. Burch's theme is Junk Food.  Ms. Bradner's theme is Indoor/Outdoor Winter Fun.  We are accepting donations!  Thank you in advance for your generosity!!      
 
*Little Caesars Pizza Night is Thursday.   

*Report cards will be coming home with students on Friday, January 25th.
*Box tops and Campbell's labels will be collected through Friday, January 25th.

Updates from 4th Grade (1/11/13)

·         Please take a moment to fill out the Howell Public School Community Survey at http://www.howellschools.com (on right side at top).  If you need a hard copy to complete, they are available in the main office.

·         Penny Drive begins Monday! 

·         Fashion Disaster Spirit Day is Monday!

·         Spelling Test 13 is Monday. Please remind your child to review their Words to Learn, Word Preview words, and their notes each week.  We encourage you to use the blog for extra activities and practice.  Click on “Important Links” for a plethora of different educational games!  http://hutchings4th.blogspot.com  

·         Rollerama Night is January 15 from 6:00-8:00pm (please note new times).

Partial Quotients Division!

Welcome Back!  We taught Partial Quotients Division this morning.  Below is a link for reference and support.  Please do not get frustrated!  Today was just an introduction.  We will be working on this more in class tomorrow!  It would be best for them to just practice Partial Quotients at this time.  (Traditional long division will be taught later.)  Thanks!! :)
