Updates from 4th Grade (12/13)

·         Secret Santa Shop is next week!  Palo’s class will shop on Tuesday.  Bradner’s and Burch’s classes will shop on Wednesday. 

·         Unit 5 math test will be Tuesday, December 18.  Review Sheets will come home tomorrow.

·         Spelling Test 12 is Monday. ·         Holiday Parties will be between specials and lunch on December 21.  Parents who signed up at Open House to plan the parties have been contacted.  Our fourth graders will be watching The Polar Express  and enjoying hot cocoa that afternoon.

Capitol Field Trips Cancelled :(

We were contacted by the Capitol today and advised to cancel our field trips for next week due to recent events in Lansing. We will work with them to try to reschedule our field trip for later in the school year. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thanks!

·        Spelling Test 10 is Monday. ·        We are going to see The Little Mermaid play at the Community Theatre on Thursday.  We will be leaving as soon as the transfer bus arrives and should return about 11:00am.  We can’t wait to see several Hutchings Students who are in the play!

·        There will be NO SCHOOL for students on Friday, December 7, due to professional development.

·        Our field trips to the Capitol in Lansing are the following week.  Mrs. Palo’s class will be going on Tuesday, Ms. Bradner’s class is going on Wednesday, and Mrs. Burch’s class is going on Friday.  Reminders specific to each class will come home next week.

Diversity Project and Feast Updates!! 11/15

·       Diversity Projects are due tomorrow!!  No late projects will be accepted.  Make sure to click the link at the top of our 4^th grade blog to sign-up for your child’s dish.  This will help us make sure we have an even distribution among the three classes.  Thanks!!

·       Diversity Feast is Monday!  Please make sure your food is here by 12:15pm if it needs to be warmed.  If it’s ready and hot, make sure it’s here by 12:30.  If you are sending food in the morning, please make sure it's labeled with your child's name and teacher's name, and instructions for reheating, if necessary.   You must clearly indicate if there are nuts in your dish, as we have several nut allergies!  We have limited fridge space, so if you can send items in crock-pots to keep warm, that would be helpful.

·         All fourth grade classes will have their Social Studies quarterly assessment on Friday, November 9^th.  We will be reviewing in class.

·         Unit 3 Math Test is Tuesday.  Review sheets are coming home today.  Please make sure your child brings theirs back on Monday so we can correct it and review together!

·         Our 4^th graders will be participating in a math/science activity with gourds during “Gourdfest” on the morning of October 31.  We are in need of gourd donations (every child will need his/her own small gourd), crafty supplies to decorate gourds, and tacky glue.  We’ve heard from parents that Walmart may have them.  Thank you for your donations!   

·         The school-wide Halloween parade will be at 2pm on October 31, with classroom parties following the parade.  If you signed up to work during the Halloween Party, you will be contacted by your child’s teacher.

·         The Book Fair is next week.  Burch’s class will be browsing on Monday at 1:30pm and Bradner/Palo classes will be browsing on Tuesday at 1:30pm.  All three classes will be shopping on Thursday, November 1 (Bradner/Palo @ 1:30pm and Burch @ 1:50pm).  The Book Fair will also be open for parents Wednesday afternoon during the parade.

·  The Hurricane Hustle is Friday, October 26th. This is a great fundraiser because all of the funds go directly to our school! Donations will be accepted through next week.  Wear comfortable shoes!

• Hutchings Movie Night is tonight at 6:30! 
• Unit three Spelling test is Monday! Students should be bringing home their Spelling notes to review, along with their Word Preview words each week.
• All fourth grade teachers will be attending Reading Apprenticeship Training out of the building this coming Monday.
• MEAP testing dates are October 9, 10, 11, 16, and 17.  It is important that your child is well rested, eats a good breakfast, and is here on testing days.  Please remind them to do their best! :)   
• There is a PTO meeting this coming Thursday, October 4th, at 7:00pm in the Media Center.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school!  We enjoyed meeting so many of you last night at Open House!!  If you were unable to attend, we will be sending home the information passed out last night.

We will begin Spelling on Monday.  Tests will be weekly on Mondays, with our first test being Monday, September 17th covering Unit 1.

If you have not yet returned your child's Registration Update (Emergency Card) or Parent Questionnaire, please send them in Monday.  Thanks!

Reminders for the Last Week of School!

·         Last day of school is Thursday, June 7.  If you have not already sent in your $2 donation, please do so on Monday.  We are planning to be outside for the picnic and other activities that day, so please make sure your child has sunscreen applied if necessary.  We have parent helpers already signed up and will contact them as needed.

·         Great job at Field Day, 4^th Grade Spelling Bee, and Talent Show this week!  We sure have some great fourth graders!!

·         Report Cards will go home with students on the last day of school.

Updates from 4th grade ~ 04/20/12

PTO needs 4^th grade parents to help with Fifth Grade Graduation set-up and serving lunch.  If you are able to help, please let us know and we'll pass your name along to PTO.  Thanks!     

Spelling Test 26 is Monday.  Make sure to review Words to Learn and the skill for this week.

Friday we are going to MJR for our Movie Field Trip.  It is important that students are at school on time because we are leaving at 9:15.  The concession stand will not be open, so there to no reason to bring money.  We will be back at school in time for lunch.

Mark your calendars!  There is No School for students on Friday, May 11, due to Professional Development.  There is No School on Memorial Day, May 28th.

The 4^th grade Spelling Bee will be May 31^st.  Five students will be representing each class and will be determined the week before the Spelling Bee.  There is no specific list to study.  Review Core Words (extra copies found on the blog under Important Links) and Words to Learn from each Spelling Test this year. 

Hutchings Elementary will be hosting its annual Field Day Tuesday, May 29, 2012.  This year’s Field Day will consist of many fun - filled stations that will challenge the students to work hard both mentally and physically, while having a great time as well. Grades third, fourth, and fifth will participate in the morning session of Field Day. 4th grade News and Notes 4/4/12

Spring Break April 6-13., 2012  School resumes on Monday, April 16^th.  Enjoy the break!

Placement Consideration forms will be available in the office from 4/16 – 4/27.  HPS does not take teacher requests, so please make sure to fill out a Placement Consideration form if you would like to express your thoughts regarding your child’s learning environment for next year.

Unit 10 Math test is Wednesday, April 18^th.  Review sheets will come home the Monday after break.

• Fine Arts Festival for 4th grade is Tuesday, March 27. Students need to be lined up next to their lockers at 7:15pm. The performance will begin at 7:30pm on the stage in the cafeteria. Fourth graders should wear dark pants/skirts and blue shirts.

• Classroom Valentine Celebrations tomorrow. If your child is bringing Valentines, please make sure they include all students. Class lists went home last week.
• We are still in need of Carnival Basket items! Thank you to those who have already donated! This is a great way to raise money for our school.

• Spelling Test 19 is Tuesday, February 21.

4th grade updates 1/27/12

• Spelling Unit 17 Test Monday.
• Mix-it Up Day is Monday! 
• February 24th will be the Hutchings Carnival. Each classroom will be putting together a basket of goodies to raffle off at the Carnival. These baskets earn money for our classrooms! Thank you in advance for your donations! Please make sure all donations are sent in by Monday, February 20. Classroom themes are:

Fourth Grade Updates 1/11/12

• Just a reminder from Mrs. Wanlass that students should NOT be bringing electronic devices out on the playground at recess or into the lunchroom.  If students bring electronic devices on the bus, it is expected that they keep them in their backpacks during the school day.
• Students need to have their Math Template every day for math.  Many students have misplaced them.  Templates are $8 to replace. 
• We do not have school the next two Mondays.  There is NO SCHOOL on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. day.  There is NO SCHOOL on Monday for a Teacher Work Day.
• Spelling Unit 15 test is Tuesday, January 17.
• Science test for the current kit is Wednesday, January 18.  Bradner/Palo will be testing States of Matter.  Burch/Highum will be testing Enery Transfer.  Study Guides will come home Friday.
• Math Unit 6 test is Friday, January 20.  Review Sheets will be passed out on Wednesday the 18th.
• The end of the quarter is Friday, January 20.

4th Grade Updates 1/6/2012

• Spelling Test 14 is Monday.  Please remind your child to study the skill for this week, the Word Preview words, and their Words To Learn.
• There will be a Social Studies test on Chapter 5 the end of next week. 
• There is NO School on Monday, January 16, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  Students also have Monday, January 23 off for a Teacher Work Day.
• The end of the quarter is Friday, January 20.
• During the next week students will be taking their second Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) test during their Technology time.  Scores will be coming home following testing.  They will complete a third SRI test at the end of the school year.  Just a reminder, fourth graders should score between a 600-900 Lexile by the end of fourth grade.
